Strathmore, Syracuse

Strathmore, Syracuse

Strathmore is a neighborhood in the southwest of Syracuse, New York state, United States. It is a mostly residential neighborhood that has many houses from the early and middle of the twentieth century. An extension of the middle- and upper-middle class Summit Ave. residential neighborhood on the other side of Onondaga Park, Strathmore was marketed as "an exclusive residential district" when it officially opened on September 27, 1919, It attracted mostly middle class residents, with a few upper middle class enclaves such as Robineau Road. The original advertisement flyer proclaimed: "There can be no cheap homes in Strathmore 'By the Park,'" the park being Onondaga Park, which contains Hiawatha Lake. It was zoned strictly residential, allowing for nothing but one-family homes, with a maximum of a one car garage. The neighborhood has been stabile. There are many Colonial Revival-, Tudor-, and Arts & Crafts-style homes, and every year there is an annual event known as the Strathmore House Tour, where five renovated houses are open to the public. In 1987 Onondaga Park became an official Syracuse Historic Preservation District.
