Ron English (born May 21, 1968 in Pomona, California) is the defensive coordinator of the University of Louisville football team known for his aggressive style of defense. He coached the defensive secondary at Michigan from 2003 through 2005; in February 2006, he accepted a position on the coaching staff of the National Football League's Chicago Bears. However, Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr persuaded English to stay at Michigan as the defensive coordinator after Jim Herrmann, the Wolverines' defensive coordinator from 1997 to 2005, accepted a coaching position with the NFL's New York Jets.

In the 2006 season, English coached only safeties, rather than the entire defensive secondary, to allow him to concentrate more fully on his responsibilities as defensive coordinator. English showed great success against most run heavy teams in the Big Ten, posting the best run defense in the nation.

English, along with all the assistant coaches at the University of Michigan, was fired on December 20, 2007 by incoming head coach Rich Rodriguez. Following Michigan's 41-35 victory over Florida in the 2008 Capital One Bowl, English announced his acceptance of defensive coordinator duties for Steve Kragthorpe at the University of Louisville. English also interviewed for the head coaching vacancies at the University of Arkansas and the University of Michigan before accepting Louisville's offer.

College career

From 1987 to 1990, English attended and played college football at the University of California, Berkeley. He graduated in 1990 with a degree in communications. In 1995, he received his master's degree in education administration from Arizona State University.

English has coached since his graduation from California. English earned a BS Communications degree from University of California - Berkeley (1990), and a MS Education Administration from Arizona State University (1995). He has served at Mt. San Antonio College, Northern Arizona University, San Diego State University, Arizona State, Michigan, and Louisville.
