map_caption=The Inyo Mountains are a shortmountain range east of the Sierra Nevada mountains in easternCalifornia in theUnited States . The range separates theOwens Valley to the west with Saline Valley to the east, extending for approximately 70 mi (130 km) SSE from the southern end of the White Mountains, from which they are separated byWestgard Pass , to east ofOwens Lake . The highest peak in the range isWaucoba Mountain (elevation 11,123 ft/3,390 m), located approximately 18 mi (29 km) southeast of Big Pine.Geologically, the mountains are a fault block range in the
Basin and Range Province , at the western end of theGreat Basin . They are considered to be among the most important and best-known LateProterozoic toCambrian sections in the United States.Approximately 205,020 acres (810 km²) of the range were designated as the
Inyo Mountain Wilderness managed by theBureau of Land Management . Much of the northern part of the range is withinInyo National Forest .External links
