Eurycratides

Eurycratides

Eurycratides (Greek: Ευρυκρατίδης; English translation: "wide ruler") was a king of Sparta from the Agiad dynasty whose reign began in around 615 BC. He was the thirteenth king of his line having succeeded his father Anaxander. His name is derived from the Greek "eury", meaning "wide". He reigned during a devastating period of war with Tegea [Herod, i. 65.] Eurycratides is mentioned in The Histories of Herodotus [Herodotus (Book 7), "(Leonides) Anaxandrides’ son, Leon’s son, Eurycratides’ son, Anaxandrus’ son, Eurycrates’ son."] In 590 BC, Eurycratides was succeeded by his son Leon.
