USS "Haddo" (SSN-604), a "Thresher"-class
submarine , was the second ship of theUnited States Navy to be named for thehaddo , a pink salmon fish prevalent on the Pacific coast of theUnited States andCanada .The contract to build her was awarded to
New York Shipbuilding Corporation inCamden, New Jersey on3 March 1959 and her keel was laid down on9 September 1960 . She was launched on18 August 1962 sponsored by Mrs.Henry M. Jackson , and commissioned on16 December 1964 , with Commander John G. Williams, Jr. in command.After shakedown out of
New London, Connecticut , in January 1965, "Haddo" arrived at her home port,Charleston, South Carolina , on8 February and joined SubRon 4. She operated off the Atlantic coast and in theCaribbean Sea until departing Charleston on7 July for theMediterranean Sea . She participated in numerous exercises with ships of the Sixth Fleet andNATO countries before returning home7 November . "Haddo" has continued this pattern of service, alternating operations out of home port in the Atlantic with Sixth Fleet deployments, through 1967."Haddo" was decommissioned and stricken from the
Naval Vessel Register on12 June 1991 . Ex-"Haddo" entered the Nuclear PoweredShip and Submarine Recycling Program inBremerton, Washington , and on20 June 1992 ceased to exist.References
