USS|Jack|SSN-605, a "Permit"-class
submarine , was the second ship of theUnited States Navy to be named for the jack, any young pike, green pike or pickerel, or large California rockfish.The contract to build her was awarded to
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard inKittery, Maine on13 March 1959 and her keel was laid down on16 September 1960 . She was launched on24 April 1963 (sponsored by Mrs. Grace Groves, the wife of Lieutenant GeneralLeslie R. Groves , head of theManhattan Project ) and commissioned on31 March 1967 , with Commander Louis T. Urbanczyk, Jr., in command."Jack" was a variation on the "Permit" class, convert|20|ft|m longer than her sisters and using an experimental direct-drive plant with counter-rotating propellers on a single shaft.
"Jack" was decommissioned and stricken from the
Naval Vessel Register on11 July 1990 . Ex-"Jack" entered the Nuclear PoweredShip and Submarine Recycling Program inBremerton, Washington , and on30 June 1992 ceased to exist.See also
