The Truce of Andrusovo ( _pl. Rozejm w Andruszowie, _ru. Андрусовское перемирие, _ua. Андрусівське перемир'я, "Andrusivs’ke Peremyr”ya", also sometimes known as Treaty of Andrusovo) was a thirteen and a half year
truce , signed in1667 betweenMuscovy and thePolish-Lithuanian Commonwealth , which were at war since1654 over the territories of modern dayUkraine andBelarus . It was signed onJanuary 30 byAfanasy Ordin-Nashchokin (Russia) andJerzy Chlebowicz (Poland ) in avillage of Andrusovo not far fromSmolensk . Poland agreed to cede the Smolensk andChernigov Voivodeship s and acknowledged Russian control over theLeft-bank Ukraine ("Livoberezhna Ukrayina").Right-bank Ukraine ("Pravoberezhna Ukrayina") and Belarus remained under Polish control. The city ofKiev had to remain with Russia only until1669 , but Russia managed to keep it by signing theEternal Peace Treaty with Poland in1686 . The region ofZaporozhian Sich was declared to remain under a joint Russo-Polish condominium. The treaty also obliged both sides to common defence against theOttoman Empire . InRussia , the Treaty of Andrusovo was generally praised as an important step towards unification of three East-Slavic nations,Ukrainians ,Belarusians andRussians , within one state, the furtherRussian Empire (since1721 ). In Ukraine the treaty is often viewed as leading to the partition of the Ukrainian nation between its more powerful neighboring states.ee also
