General San Martín Park

General San Martín Park

The Parque General San Martín is a park located in the city of Mendoza, Argentina.

The construction of the park, originally named "Parque del Oeste", started on 6 November 1896 under the direction of the landscape architect Carlos Thays who employed a combination of English and French XIX century styles in its design. The gates at the main entrance are dated 1909 and are decorated with a condor and the coat of arms of the city.

The park has 34 sculptures decorating the paths and roads. "El rosedal" (rose garden) is a pedestrianized walk that was inaugurated in 1919. Also to be found within the park is the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas, a zoo, the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, a monument that commemorates the crossing of the Andes by José de San Martín and his army, and a large lake inaugurated in 1906 which has The Regatas Club on its shore.
