Mellissa Ulachi Ulanma Offoha is a visually impaired singer-songwriter, pianist and author. She is best known as Lachi.

Early life

Born in Baltimore, Maryland the sixth of seven children. Lachi has a congenital visual impairment, Coloboma of the retina, lending her to uncorrectable legal blindness. After enduring many years of being socially outcast due to crossed-eyes, Lachi received cosmetic surgery 1999 on her eyes. She has overcome her severe visual impairment through her music, writing and performing vocal piano pieces, many of which were written as a direct result her visual disability.

Lachi received an undergraduate degree in Economics and Management and Society at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she created the all female a cappella group, Cadence. After graduating she moved to New York City to embark upon her music and writing career while working towards a Master’s degree in Music Technology at New York University. Apart from obtaining many odd jobs and side acting gigs, Lachi interned at MTV Networks Radio and also worked as an office assistant at NYU.

Lachi’s music can best be described as jazz-influenced, piano-driven alternative rock: with a hint of antifolk characteristics. She has written and produced over 300 songs. Her unique style is both eclectic and intimate, and has won her recognition as an Independent Music Awards finalist for 2006.

She completed her first album, “And This is My Life,” produced by Sony freelancer Robert Honablue, formerly of CBS Radio, released June 6, 2006. Lachi has also written and published her firstt novel, Dante’s Destiny as a high school senior in 2001.

Lachi has now formed a band of the same name with Gabriel MacDonnell-Chang on guitar and Andrew Boxer on drums. All three are multi-instrumentalists who've participated in many acclaimed projects.
