Lyskovsky District ( _ru. Лысковский район) is an administrative district (
raion ) in theNizhny Novgorod Oblast ,Russia . Itsadministrative center is the town ofLyskovo .Geography
Lyskovsky District is located on both sides of the
Volga River , about 90 km to the east ofNizhny Novgorod .The district is divided into 15 administrative units: the town administration (
Lyskovo ),urban-type settlement administration (Makarievo ), and 13 villageadministrations, which include 98 villages.The area of the district is 2134 square kilometers.
Demographics
Population of the district is 43,800, of which 24,200 live in the town of Lyskovo(2002 Census).
History
In the days of
Russian Empire , the territory of today's Lyskovo district wasmostly within the MakarievUyezd of Nizhny NovgorodGuberniya . The officialcenter of the uyezd was in the town of Makariev (today'surban-type settlement ofMakarievo ) on the northern bank of theVolga , next to the ancient
Makariev Monastery.Until the fire of1816 , Makariev was the home to the annualMakariev Fair .However, the administrative offices of the uyezd were located in the village of
Lyskovo , which, being located on the southern bank of the Volga, was conveniently served by theKazan Post Road.In 1925, a few years after the
Bolshevik Revolution , the old Makaryev Uyezd was reorganized intothe Lyskovo District.Economy
Lyskovo brewery and vegetable canning plant are well known in the region.
