In the days of Russian Empire, the territory of today's Lyskovo district wasmostly within the Makariev Uyezd of Nizhny Novgorod Guberniya. The officialcenter of the uyezd was in the town of Makariev (today's urban-type settlementof Makarievo) on the northern bank of the Volga, next to the ancient
Makariev Monastery.Until the fire of 1816, Makariev was the home to the annual Makariev Fair.

However, the administrative offices of the uyezd were located in the village of Lyskovo, which, being located on the southern bank of the Volga, was conveniently served by the Kazan Post Road.

In 1925, a few years after the Bolshevik Revolution, the old Makaryev Uyezd was reorganized intothe Lyskovo District.
