He served the Parliament of England as a Captain of Horse during the First Civil War and was a Major in the New Model Army by 1649. Active in Scotland during the early 1650s. In June 1656, during the Rule of the Major-Generals, Bridge was appointed Major-General in the North-West after the death of Charles Worsley. In 1659, he was appointed Governor of Dunkirk. He supported George Monck 1659-60 and retained his commission at the Restoration. Later he served as governor of Barbados, whose capital Bridgetown may have been named after him.
