Lincoln Community School is a private school in Accra, Ghana, West Africa. It is a non-profit, college-preparatory, international school. There is an expatriate population associated with the various embassies, Foreign Service agencies, NGO’s, United Nations organizations, and international businesses. They also have a large number of students whose parents are Ghanaian nationals. 20% of the students are Americans, 14% are Ghanaians, and 66% are from other countries. English is the language of instruction. Classes are offered from Preschool through to grade 12. The school year is divided into 2 semesters (August-December & January–June) and additionally into quarterly assessment periods. It was established in 1968.

Curriculum

The curriculum is international and multicultural with an emphasis on inquiry and problem solving. It is designed to be appropriately challenging, and to allow a smooth transition into other international schools. The three levels of the International Baccalaureate Programs guide the curriculum: -The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) (Preschool – Grade 5), -The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) (Grades 6 – 10) and -The IB Diploma Programme (DP) (Grades 11 – 12).Special classes in art, music, physical education, theater, technology and French are offered.

Accreditations

Lincoln Community School is authorized by the International Baccalaureate (IBO) [http://www.ibo.org] Middle Years (MYP) and Diploma Programmes (DP). It is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA), and is a member of both the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA).

Facilities

School facilities are air conditioned. 63 classrooms including 3 art rooms, 4 science labs, 3 technology labs, 2 music rooms, a visual and performing arts center, junior and senior school libraries, an early childhood center, a world language center and office space for guidance and administration. Sports facilities include a multipurpose hall, playground, a multipurpose court, a climbing wall, 2 fields and a swimming pool, a large [gymnasium] , a stage, and dressing room facilities. Playground space includes 2 grassy playing fields with recreational apparatus and a large playground with a multipurpose court. The [library] has 35,000 volumes plus multi-media equipment. The internet is available to all students as well to all teaching and admin staff with 2 megabit upload and download speeds.

Enrollment

As of September 2006, the student population is 573 students from 51 countries.

Faculty

There are 66 international educators from 14 countries, many with advanced degrees and all qualified to teach in their assigned subject/grade areas. 25 teaching assistants provide support to many classes.

Organization

The School is governed by a 9-member Board of Directors. Members of the LCS Parent Association elect 6 directors for a two-year term and three directors are appointed by the U.S. Ambassador.

Finances

In the 2006-2007 school year, the School’s income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are: PreSchool: $2,500; PreK: $5,950; Kdg.-grade 8: $10,650; grades 9-10: $12,150; and grade 11-12: $12,350. SRC

Lincoln has an active and instrumental Student Representative Council in the Senior School. There is an executive board elected by the student body, which includes President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Publicity Manager. Each grade also elects a committee, and the President and Vice President attend SRC meetings every Monday. Class Meetings are held every other Wednesday, and additional meetings can be held if desired. The SRC president meets with the Senior school principal every Wednesday to discuss the SRC's decisions.
