1908 -January 3 ,1995 ) was an earlybiophysicist andvirologist . He served as the first President of theBiophysical Society .Career
Williams attended
Cornell University , completing a B.S. in 1931 and a Ph.D. inphysics in 1935. He was also selected for membership in theQuill and Dagger society. Together with
Heinz Fraenkel-Conrat , Williams studied theTobacco mosaic virus , and showed that a functional virus could be created out of purifiedRNA and aprotein coat. That same year, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Williams was involved in the early use of electron micrography in biology, [Williams inLinus Pauling papers.
