According to "Sickened", Gregory's
mother frequently took her to variousdoctors ,coaching her toact sick er than she was and exaggerating hersymptoms , and demanding increasinglyinvasive procedures todiagnose the girl'simaginary illnesses. Athome , hermother allegedlyfed Gregory a nutritionally inadequate diet (based onfoods a doctor had said Gregory shouldn't have), administeredprescription medicine erratically, sometimes in double doses, and filled herdays with strenuous physical labor. According to Gregory, hermother even becameupset when onedoctor wouldn't performopen heart surgery on herdaughter .In addition, "Sickened" recounts physical and
emotional abuse inflicted by Gregory'sfather . Julie Gregory was alsosubject to other kinds ofabuse . Hermother would alsofabricate stories about her and herbrother , Danny to theirfather .
