Greed Island

Greed Island

"Greed Island" is a fictional video game in the manga and anime series "Hunter × Hunter". It is played on the "Joystation" video game console, is out of print, and sells at auctions for at least 8 billion jenny (the currency of "Hunter × Hunter"). The game transports its players' physical bodies into the world of "Greed Island", only releasing them when they die (at which point they die in "real life" too), when they win, or when they use a special card in the game that lets them out.

Gameplay

Each and every player entering "Greed Island" must possess a ring specially designed for the game. Inside the game, there are two spells you can use while in possession of the ring:
*"Book" ---- causes the binder to appear (or disappear)
*"Gain" ---- changes a card into an object to use

Each player is given a card book (the binder) when they start, and they can call or dismiss just by saying the word "book". Anything in the game world (treasure, plants, animals, etc.) can be turned into a card if certain conditions are met, and these cards can subsequently be permanently turned back into the original object, or stored in a player's "book".

An object's card looks like a trading card game card, with a picture of the object and a short description of it. Additionally, there are "spell cards" which are only available from other players or from shops on Greed Island, which cast "spells" when they're used, like showing you the contents of another player's "book", teleporting you to a specific city, teleporting you out of the game, etc.

Cards

Among the thousands of different cards that can potentially be made out of objects, won in competitions and "minigames" or bought at stores, there are 100 "fixed slot" cards (numbered 000-099) which are the only cards that will fit in their corresponding "fixed slots" at the back of each player's book. Once a player has acquired all 100 "fixed slot" cards, (s)he wins the game and is allowed to take 3 fixed slot cards to use in the outside world.

Cards must be stored in the binder, or else they will turn back into an object after 1 minute. As with the earlier condition of not being able to have an object in card state twice, the object cannot be transformed back.

The card's difficulty to be found is indicated by a letter : SS S A B C D E F G H. SS being the hardest to find (such as the final card, "A Ruler's Blessing", only awarded to the highest scorer on a quiz activated when a player obtains 99 fixed slot cards) and H being the easiest (such as water or rocks). The letter is followed by a number, indicating the amount of that item allowed to be in card form in in the possession of players at any given time, including copies made with the card Clone.

The lower the number, the rarer the card is. In addition, if a person acquires an object, but the card number limit is reached, the object cannot be converted into a card. For example: suppose a card's limit is 4 cards and there are already 4 people in the game who own the card, then the next person who acquires the object corresponding to the card cannot change the object into a card.

Finally, if a person dies in the game, the ring and all their card data will disappear, this is to prevent people from killing others just to gain cards. However, if he is killed outside the game, then another person may take his ring and gain the cards he had.

There are 40 types of spell card in the game, numbered 1001 to 1040. It is used for attack/defense, stealing, spying, teleporting, transforming objects, etc. However, there is no spell exists to kill or maim.

Discoveries about Greed Island

Before you enter the game, you are given a memory card, then, you use your nen to enter the game. However, Shalnark deduced that just Hatsu is not enough to allow a person to leave the real world and enter a virtual one, as that would require separating a person's body and soul. Thus, he reasoned, the game only teleports a person from one part of the world to another. In reality, Greed Island is an island in the real world.

The name of the game is actually taken from the names of the game's creators. Ging decided to use the first letter of each of the creator's names, such as G for Ging, R for Razor, 2 E's for Elena and Eta (the girls at the entrance and exit), and L for List. Ging actually changed the name of creator Wdwune to Dwun just so they could have another D.

As with other fictitious games like the ones played in "Yu-Gi-Oh!", there has been enough interest in "Greed Island" among fans of "Hunter × Hunter" that real renditions of the game have been produced for the PlayStation 2 and the Game Boy Advance.

It is possible to take Paladin's Necklace out to turn a card like Plot of Beach into a non-specified card like Accompany or Pickpocket.

nihongo|Biscuit Krueger|ビスケット=クルーガー|Bisuketto Kurūgā first comes into the story in Greed Island. Although she appears to be a little girl, in her true form she is actually a massive and extremely muscular woman, who is about 8 times the size of her girl form. The size increase is so drastic that the extremely loose and stretchy clothing she wears as a girl becomes stretched to its limits. Killua even calls her "gorilla", but not to her face. She is ridiculously large in her true for, estimated to be 9 ft tall and 550 lbs, almost twice the height, 3 times the weight, and 3 times the size of an average man. The only reason she stays in her girl form is because she claims she hates her original form's appearance, calling it 'way too buff'. Regardless of which form she is in, she is very powerful, though she does receive a tremendous power boost when she transforms to her real appearance, being able to pick up and fling grown men with one hand without effort. She helps Gon and Killua train while they are at Greed Island, leading them closer to the end of the game. Her goal in the game was to get the gem found only in that game, Blue Planet. She prefers to be called "Bisky." In addition, she was the teacher of Wing, who is currently the teacher of Zushi and first taught Nen to Gon and Killua. After the events of Greed Island, she returns to help Gon and Killua train for their battles against the Knuckle and Shoot.

*Nen Ability - Magical Spa Services: Piano MassageUsing her nen, Biscuit creates an esthetician by the name of Cookie. She can give a "piano massage" that allows a person to sleep for a half hour and feel as if he/she had a full eight hours of sleep. While this ability hasn't been shown useful to actual combat, it can really impact training speeds and allow more time to get it completed. Cookie is also capable of a wide array of other massage techniques that will, among other things, restore health to skin, release muscle tension, and relieve arthritis.

Not actually a participant in Greed Island, Battera is a multi-billionaire that spent most of his fortune to buy as many copies of Greed Island as he could find. He hires several dozen hunters to play the game and offers a reward of 50 billion jenny to whoever manages to clear the game and bring him back the three cards he specified from inside the game.

It was discovered that Battera needed the Archangel's Breath card from Greed Island to heal his terminally ill lover. However, she died before the game was completed, and the reward disappeared as well.

Tsezguerra has a high jump record of over 16 meters; he achieves this by focusing his nen under his feet before he jumps. He takes part in the Dodgeball game against Razor and is heavily injured. He and his team later engage Genthru's team in a chase game in order to buy time for Gon to train his reaction time against Genthru's "Little Flower" ability and for Killua to heal his hands.

Abengane is an exorcist--a nen remover who can summon a creature to remove curses to himself or to other users. First appearing during the Greed Island arc, Hisoka finds Abengane and hires him to remove the curse placed on Chrollo by Kurapika. We are unaware if he will be able to or not, nor do we know if he has done so.

One of the conditions for his ability to remove curses is that the creature he summons would attach onto himself, and devour both the nen causing the curse and his own, rendering him unable to use nen. The only way to rid himself of the creature is to fulfill the original condition for removing the curse (i.e. he used it to remove the time bomb Genthru placed on him, but the creature would drain his nen until he touches Genthru and say: "I caught the bomber"). Therefore, even if he removes the curse Kurapika placed on Chrollo, he would still be unable to use nen (but could now talk with other members of the Phantom Troupe).

He seems to control the gorillas and can quickly swap the position of them with his own or also with someone other, friend or foe. He attempts to use this ability to defeat Rezaiu in the dodgeball but it failed. He is the one who gives Gon, Killua, and Biscuit the remaining cards needed to win Greed Island.

The secret identity of the Greed Island Bomber (「爆弾魔」"Bomb Devil") is nihongo|Genthru|ゲンスルー|Gensurū. He leads the Bomb Devil trio, with members Sub and Bara. Among the players of the Greed Island game, Genthru first appeared as a member of the allied players. He played a role as an informer and perhaps a high position member of the group for the last 5 years. It was later revealed that he placed a Nen time bomb on every member of the allied group, blackmailing their lives for all the designated cards they held. A sadist, Genthru didn't keep his promise to the end and detonated all the Nen time bombs, as a result killing all the members of the allied group except Abengane, who had managed to remove the bomb with his nen removal ability before the detonation.

Genthru was later accompanied by his own teammates, Sub and Bara, and continued to amass the rest of the designated cards to win the game through any means. He was later defeated by Gon in a mano-a-mano (while Killua and Biscuit drew away his teammates and defeated them separately), where Gon spotted his weakness and overconfidence. However, the nen remover commented that Genthru is still stronger than Gon, and he would not have won if he hadn't known and prepared for dealing with Genthru's abilities beforehand.

*Nen Abilities:Countdown "Sound of Life" (カウントダウン「命の音」)
"Countdown" is a destructive curse type nen, where Genthru places an invisible "time bomb" onto an opponent through saying a secret word (which is "Bomber"). To reveal and begin the countdown of the bomb, he has to explain how this skill works, including the method for removing the bomb, as a condition of activation. In order to remove the time bomb, while making contact with Genthru an opponent must say "I caught the Bomber." The bombs' timer starts at 600 and goes down with each time the heart beats, meaning that the bombs countdown rate will differ depending on the circumstances.

Little Flower "A Handful of Gunpowder" (リトルフラワー「一握りの火薬」)
"Little Flower" is a smaller explosive type skill that he uses in close combat by grabbing targets with his hands. Using a type of Kou, Genthru focuses the aura to his hands in order to create an explosion where he touches his opponent. It is incredibly destructive as well, as shown when the ability blew up Gon's hands. The weakness of this skill is that Genthru has to protect his own hands with nen while using it, thus leaving the rest of his body less protected with nen aura.

Release
"Release" is Genthru's ability to instantly detonate all the nen time bombs he has planted and activated using Countdown, no matter the time remaining. The use of Release requires the other two members of the Bomb Devil Trio, Bara and Sub, to touch their thumbs to Genthru's, and for all three of them to simultaneously say "Release". On Greed Island, Genthru convinced his victims the bombs would all be deactivated once Release was used, before using the ability to kill his former allies.

Bara

A member of Genthru's Bomb Devil trio. He is defeated by Biscuit with a single punch after she reveals her true appearance.

Sub

Sub is a member of Genthru's Bomb Devil trio. He is defeated by Killua in a one-on-one fight, in which he is used as a test subject for Killua's new yo-yo and electricity techniques.

Binolt is a Greed Island player, and he is also a blacklist hunter and a bounty hunter. He is a cannibal and his favorite dish is flesh of 22-year-old girls. His main weapons are the shears he wears on his belt. Before he fights, he cuts off the hair of his opponent and eats them. On the basis of the hair he can learn much information about the opponent, such as the age, muscles, diseases, strengths, hereditary dispositions and much more. He was quickly defeated by Biscuit when he tried to attack the team. Later, he had to avoid the attacks of Gon and Killua for two weeks in order to leave the stone quarry where he was defeated. He then left the Island and gave himself up to the police.

Razor is one of the Gamemasters and a creator of Greed Island. Razor was entrusted by Gon's father that he was not to hold back against his son should he ever comes to Greed Island. Razor is a tall and well built man by appearance and perhaps likes to play sports (especially ball games) as a pastime.

Razor is a key person in getting one of the hardest designated card of the game. To get the card, the challengers must confront Razor and his 14 devils and defeat them in different sporting events. All of his pirates are trained Nen users and can only be defeated by skilled Users. It was learned that the 14 devils were not the pirates that follows him but his ability to emit 14 nen creatures at will. Each creature is numbered from 1-14 with a Zero numbered one acting as referee for the dodge ball match; he can also merge them together, which will make them stronger. He can also emit nen into a ball (or create a ball from nen) and throw it at his opponent, which is extremely strong and could critically injure or kill his opponent on a direct hit. He was defeated in a deadly dodgeball game by Gon's allied party (consisting of Gon, Killua, Biscuit, Hisoka, and several other hunter/players hired by Battera).

Razor later revealed to Gon that he was formerly a convict captured by Ging and brought to the island as a prisoner. Inspired by Ging's spirit, Razor helped him create Greed Island and becomes the warden for the convicts. He also became one of Ging's best friends and was entrusted to look after the island as one of its Gamemasters.
