The original lineup spanned eight years and eight albums, though Osbourne did leave briefly in 1977 to be replaced byDave Walker . Osbourne was ultimately fired from the band in 1979 due to hisalcohol anddrug s dependancy, and he was replaced by ex-Rainbow vocalistRonnie James Dio . Many lineup changes happened from the arrival of Dio; vocalists included ex-Deep Purple frontmanIan Gillan andGlenn Hughes , bassists includedBob Daisley andDave Spitz and drummers includedCozy Powell andEric Singer . Tony Iommi is the only member to have been in every incarnation of the band since its formation in 1969.
