Kemekem is one of the 105
woreda s in theAmhara Region ofEthiopia . Part of theDebub Gondar Zone , Kemekem is bordered on the south byFogera , on the west byLake Tana , on the north by theSemien Gondar Zone , and on the east by Ebenat. The administrative center isAddis Zemen ; other towns includeAmba Meda ,Wereta andYifag .Rivers in this woreda include the Arno and Reb, which drain into Lake Tana.
Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 303,828, of whom 149,311 were males and 154,517 were females; 58,379 or 19.21% of its population are urban dwellers, which is greater than the Zone average of 8.3%. With an estimated area of 1,560.00 square kilometers, Kemekem has an estimated population density of 194.8 people per square kilometer, which is greater than the Zone average of 169.21. The woreda of Kemekem was heavily affected by the flash floods in Ethiopia that started
6 September and receded by26 September 2006 . The heavy rain caused Lake Tana to overflow its banks, making thousands of people homeless.
