- Hans Thirring
Hans Thirring (
March 23 ,1888 -March 22 ,1976 ) was anAustria n theoretical physicist, professor , and father of thephysicist Walter Thirring .Together with the
mathematician Josef Lense , he is known for the prediction of the Lense-Thirringframe dragging effect ofgeneral relativity in 1918.Thirring, H. Über die Wirkung rotierender ferner Massen in der Einsteinschen Gravitationstheorie. "Physikalische Zeitschrift" 19, 33 (1918). (On the Effect of Rotating Distant Masses in Einstein's Theory of Gravitation)] Thirring, H. Berichtigung zu meiner Arbeit: "Über die Wirkung rotierender Massen in der Einsteinschen Gravitationstheorie". "Physikalische Zeitschrift" 22, 29 (1921). (Correction to my paper "On the Effect of Rotating Distant Masses in Einstein's Theory of Gravitation")] Lense, J. and Thirring, H. Über den Einfluss der Eigenrotation der Zentralkörper auf die Bewegung der Planeten und Monde nach der Einsteinschen Gravitationstheorie. "Physikalische Zeitschrift" 19 156-63 (1918) (On the Influence of the Proper Rotation of Central Bodies on the Motions of Planets and Moons According to Einstein's Theory of Gravitation)]He received a deferrment during
World War I because he had broken one of his feet while skiing. He was a leadingpacifist before theAnschluss and afterWorld War II .But tragically he could not save his older son, who was declared missing in action during the final two months of World War II. His body was never located.Hans Thirring served as assistant, professor, and head of the institute for theoretical physics ofthe
University of Vienna until his forced retirement in 1938 after the Anschluss, the annexation of Austria byNazi Germany . After the end of World War II, he was reinstated and became dean of the philosophical faculty in the years 1946-1947. He was also active in the Socialist Party of Austria and served as member of theFederal Council of Austria during 1957-1963.References
