- Diplomatic missions of Afghanistan
At the height of the Taliban regime in the 1990s the only Afghan missions were in
Pakistan ,Saudi Arabia and theUnited Arab Emirates (the only countries which recognised theTaliban regime). For a while when the Taliban controlled 90% of the country, the ultra-fundamentalist regime was also seeking to regain control ofAfghanistan 's seat at theUnited Nations , held by the Northern Alliance.Shortly after the
September 11 attacks,Pakistan ,Saudi Arabia and theUnited Arab Emirates closed down the Afghan missions to the pointAfghanistan had no foreign functioning embassies. As of 2008, Afghanistan has diplomatic missions in 42 countries around the world.Europe
