According to the 2001 census, there are 5,998 inhabitants in the municipality, 88.53% which are Croats. According to the 2011 census, there are 4,715 inhabitants in the municipality. The second largest ethnic group are Serbs who live mainly in two villages in the north of the municipality.
Name
The village's name means "Germans" in Croatian. Before World War II there was a substantial Danube Swabian minority resident here. The Communist regime of Josip Broz Tito expelled almost all of them at the end of World War II after 1945. However the town retained its name.
