Christian Feest

Christian Feest (born July 20, 1945, at Broumov, Czechoslovakia, now Czech Republic), is an Austrian ethnologist and ethnohistorian.

Feest specialized in the Native Americans of the Northeast and in the Native American anthropology of art. He did pioneer work on European-Native American contact and on the history of museum collections.

Feest studied at the University of Vienna in the 1960s. He started publishing articles in 1964. His 1969 dissertation was "Viginia Algonkin, 1570-1703." He worked at the Museum für Völkerkunde in Vienna and at the university. He investigated the social and cultural aspects of Native American drinking for his Habilitationsschrift, titled Trinken und Trinkgewohnheiten im indianischen Nordamerika (1980).

Feest was professor of the ethnology of indigenous America at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt am Main from 1993 to 2004. Since then has served as director of the Museum für Völkerkunde (Museum of Ethnology) in Vienna.[1]

He has two prominent brothers, Gerhard Gleich and Johannes Feest. Feest is an editor of the European Review of Native American Studies [2]
