Arabahmet Mosque

Arabahmet Mosque

Arabahmet Mosque mosque is situated in the city of Nicosia in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It was built in 1845. This mosque, which is one of the most beautiful examples of old Turkish architecture, is located in Arabahmet, the only district which today reflects and preserves the historical character of old Lefkoþa.

Arabahmet Mosque is dominant in the area. It was built at the turn of the 17th century in memory of Arab Ahmet Paþa, himself the former governor of Rhodes. Arap Ahmet Paþa also helped the army during the conquest of Cyprus by the Ottomans and attained to the Governorship of Cyprus from 1584 until 1587. Two of the most important characteristics of the mosque are the tombs of some important persons of the past in its garden and, secondly, it is the only historic mosque in Lefkoþa with a dome.
