He was born in Okgu, in present-day Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do, to a family of the Pyeonggang Chae clan. He entered the literary stage in 1924 with his short story entitled "Toward the Three Paths." He began to attract critical attention ten years later, with the publication of "A Ready-Made Life."
