footnotes =Varniţa is a commune in the Anenii Noi district,
Moldova , located nearBendery (Tighina). It is also considered asuburb of Bendery. After the 1992War of Transnistria , Varniţa remained controlled by the government of the Republic of Moldova, while the city of Bendery is controlled by the separatist authorities ofTransnistria .According to the
2004 Moldovan Census , there were 4,210 inhabitants, 3,390 of which were ethnicRomanians , 228Ukrainians , 454Russians , 15Gagauzes , 35 Bulgarians, 1Jew , 1Pole , 50Gypsies , and 36 other/undeclared.The leaders of Transnistria mention Varniţa as being part of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, but the attempts of Transnistrian authorities to take control of the town failed.
