Driven Right Leg

Driven Right Leg

A Driven Right Leg (DRL) circuit is a component of many medical recording instruments that aids in the reduction of electrical noise. Medical recording devices such as ECGs/EKGs, EEGs and EMGs read extremely small electrical signals from the body. Often these devices pick up stray electrical signals (“noise” or “artifact”) and record them as if they were the desired recording. To help cancel these noise signals, a DRL circuit may be implemented. This circuit reads what it believes to be noise (usually Common Mode Noise) and feeds a very small amount of electricity back into the body to actively negate this noise. This technique is highly effective.
