Pakistani honours system

Pakistani honours system

The Pakistani honours system has evolved out of the Indian honours system and the British honours system since 1947, when Pakistan became fully independent within the British Commonwealth (the Commonwealth of Nations since 1949).

Dominion of Pakistan (1947-56)

After Pakistan became independent on the 14 August 1947, the award of honours from both the British honours system and the Indian honours system ceased. The conferral of peerages, knighthoods, and damehoods was prohibited. Those who were awarded titles prior to Pakistan's independence were permitted to retain and use them.

Only one medal was instituted in this period;

*Pakistani Independence Medal,1947.

Islamic Republic of Pakistan (since 1956)

Since 1956, Pakistan has instituted a fully indigenous honours system, which consists of orders, gallantry decorations, and medals.
