Inner City (Budapest)

Inner City ( _hu. Belváros; _de. Innenstadt) is the historical old town of Pest. Now it belongs to District 5th of Budapest, Hungary. The traditional shopping centre of Budapest, Váci utca is located there. The city's commercial life, including banks and travel agencies, is centralized in Belváros. Location

Belváros is situated on the banks of the Danube. Its borders follow the line of the old city walls.

The borders of Belváros are: Vigadó tér (southern side) - Deák Ferenc utca - Deák Ferenc tér (southern side) - Károly körút - Múzeum körút - Vámház körút - the river Danube.

Administration

Pest was granted the charter of free royal town in 1704. The core of the city was first called Belváros or Innenstadt during the 18th century, when suburbs grown up around it. After the unification of Budapest in 1873, Belváros became the 4th district of the capital. On 1 January 1950 it was merged with neighbouring Lipótváros to form District 5th. The district is officially called "Belváros-Lipótváros" since 1990. [Budapest teljes utcanévlexikona, 1998, p. 35]

Transport

Budapest's three existing metro lines converge at Deák square where the blue and the red lines meet the Millennium Underground Railway. There are several bus, tram and trolleybus lines in this area.
