Spielwarenmesse International Toy Fair Nürnberg is the largest international trade fair for toys and games. Only trade visitors associated with the toy business, journalists and invited guests are admitted. On the fair taking place for six days each year about 2,700 exhibitors from about 60 countries are presenting their novelties. In 2011, 79.000 trade visitors and purchasers came for the fair, 54% of them were international visitors. The fair is organized by “Spielwarenmesse eG” [1], a marketing and trade fair service provider, based in Nuremberg, Germany.

Range of products

Every year, about one million products are displayed on the fair, including approximately 70,000 new products. On the fair, they are presented in twelve different product groups. These are, as of the 2011 fair:

The awarded products stand out due to their degree of innovation, product concept, creativity and playing idea. A jury of industry experts determines the winners in five categories (as of Spielwarenmesse International Toy Fair 2011):[2]

Global Toy Conference

The Global Toy Conference takes place on the last day of the fair and deals with issues concerning the future of the toy trade and industry, e.g. sustainability, toy safety, online marketing and successful selling on the Internet.


Spielwarenmesse eG

Spielwarenmesse eG is the organizer of the Spielwarenmesse International Toy Fair. It was founded under the name of “Deutsche Spielwaren-Fachmesse eGmbH” by 46 toy companies on 11 July 1950. It was renamed “Spielwarenmesse eGmbH” in 1958 and ultimately “Spielwarenmesse eingetragene Genossenschaft” in 1973. The cooperative’s organs are the executive board, the supervisory board and the General Assembly. Spielwarenmesse eG founded its 100-per-cent subsidiary “Spielwarenmesse (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.” in 2010. The team in Shanghai is responsible for Chinese exhibitors at the Spielwarenmesse International Toy Fair. Representatives of Spielwarenmesse eG act as local contacts for exhibitors and visitors all over the world.
