The London Brick Company was established in 1899 by
John Cathles Hill who brought together thePeterborough andFletton brickworks. At that time thePeterborough brickworks had the largestHoffmann kiln in the world, capable of baking 1 million bricks at a time.The Company was incorporated in 1900 under the leadership of
Sir Malcolm Stewart . The Company's activities expanded in the 1920s and demand peaked in the 1950s and 1960s with the rebuilding ofLondon afterWorld War II .Many Italian families came to
Bedfordshire in the 1950s to work in theMarston Vale brickworks. London Brick Land Fill was formed and began the tipping of household and industrial refuse into the old clay pits in the
Marston Vale area.In the 1970s The London Brick Company bought several competitors including the Marston Valley Brick Company and Redland Brick. Some brickworks were closed and others were modernised.
The company was acquired by Hanson in 1984.
