Bethel Baptist Institutional Church is an historic church in Jacksonville, Florida, in the United States. Its building built in 1904 at 1058 North Hogan Street was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 6, 1978

History

Formed in 1838 by four whites and two blacks, Bethel Baptist is the oldest Baptist congregation in Jacksonville. Its first building, built by 1840 at Duval and Newnan streets, was the first church erected in the city. It was sold to Presbyterians in 1844 and another church was built in the west LaVilla section. After the Civil War, litigation over racial segregation resulted in the black members receiving cash for their interest in the property but they were able to keep the name of Bethel Baptist Church. They built a new church in another place but it burned in the Great Fire of 1901. [Wood, Wayne W., Jacksonville's Architectural Heritage: Landmarks for the Future, revised edition, 1996, Gainesville, Florida: University Press of Florida, p. 66]

The building built in 1904 by Utica, New York, architect, M. H. Hubbard combines Greek Revival and Romanesque Revival architecture. [ [http://www.flheritage.com/services/sites/fht/record_t.cfm?ID=247&type=c&index=16 Florida Heritage listing Bethel Baptist Institutional Church] ]

Current use

Bethel Baptist Institutional Church is still an active congregation with over 10,000 members. The 1904 building is now part of a much larger church complex. [ [http://www.bethelite.org/#http://www.bethelite.org/ Bethel Baptist Institutional Church website] ]
