John Dillard

John Dillard

John Dillard (August 12, 1760 - June 5, 1842) was an American soldier and pioneer settler.

Dillard was born in Culpeper County, Virginia and served in the American Revolution, achieving the rank of Captain. (Dillard's ancestor George Dillard arrived from England to Jamestown, Virginia, in the seventeenth century.) For his service, Captain Dillard was given a convert|1000|acre|km2|0|sing=on land grant in the northeast corner of Georgia in what would later become Rabun County. In about 1794, he settled in the area, becoming one of the earliest settlers in that part of Georgia. According to legend, Captain Dillard made peace with the Cherokee Indians (the Native Americans who were living in the region at that time) by "purchasing" the land a muzzle-loading rifle, a jug of apple brandy, a coonskin cap and $3.00.

Captain Dillard's descendants became prominent and the Rabun County town of Dillard is named after the family. In addition, his descendants founded and continue to operate the Dillard House, which offers lodging and a family-style restaurant.
