Pittsburgh Tri-State

The Pittsburgh Tri-State is the U.S. region that is centered around the transportation, medical, academic, economic, media and federal resources based in Pittsburgh. This definition has also been adopted by many corporate regional offices in eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and the state of West Virginia. It roughly covers areas of those three states including: eastern Ohio, much of north and central West Virginia (if not the entire state) all of western Pennsylvania. and most of central Pennsylvania. Although out of the logical "Tri-State" a few western counties of Maryland are usually included. Though rarely included, the extreme southwestern corner of New York state, and the extreme the northeastern part of Kentucky have some Pittsburgh regional influences. Because the Pittsburgh region covers large portions (from a fourth of Ohio, to half of Pennsylvania to almost all of West Virginia) of three states, it is referred to as the Tri-State, although by a very liberal definition the region could be considered to touch six states.

The area is an extension of the Pittsburgh DMA and the Pittsburgh Metro Area both officially designated areas covering western Pennsylvania, western Maryland and northern West Virginia. Although including areas that are mostly autonomous in their own right such as Youngstown-Sharon, Steubenville-Wheeling-Weirton and Erie-Meadville, the Pittsburgh Tri-State is united in the fact that many cable systems carry Pittsburgh-based media, Pittsburgh sports teams have affiliate radio as well enjoying the primary fanbases, the areas use the Pittsburgh International Airport as their major gateway to the world, and Pittsburgh hospitals such as Allegheny General and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as their resource for major surgery or trauma. Pittsburgh television affiliates and FSN Pittsburgh (with exclusive rights to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Pirates and many Pittsburgh Steelers and Pitt Panthers shows) network reach also displays the limit to regional Pittsburgh.

It can also be defined through the federally designated areas served by the Pittsburgh district of the Army Corps of Engineers, the Pittsburgh branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, the FBI and several other federal and national organizations.

Among the other Pittsburgh area colleges and universities are the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Carlow University, Chatham University, Duquesne University, Franciscan University of Steubenville, La Roche College, Point Park University, Robert Morris University, Saint Vincent College, Seton Hill University, Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, California University of Pennsylvania, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, West Virginia University, Geneva College, Westminster College,Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University, Wheeling Jesuit University, and West Liberty State College.
