Edward Gerstenfeld

Edward (Eduard) Gerstenfeld (1915, Lvov – 1943, Soviet Union) was a Polish chess master.

He was born in Lvov (Lemberg, Lwów, Lviv), Austria-Hungary. From 1935 to 1939, he lived in Łódź. In 1935, Gerstenfeld played in a quadrangular match with Izaak Appel, Achilles Frydman and Jakub Kolski in Łódź. In 1935, he took 15th in Warsaw (3rd POL-ch). The event was won by Savielly Tartakower. In 1936, he played a match against Abram Szpiro in Łódź. In 1937, he tied for 9-10th in Jurata (4th POL-ch; Tartakower won). In 1938, he took 6th in Łódź (Vasja Pirc won).

When World War II broke out, he returned to Lvov (then Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union). In 1940, he took 4th in Lvov (Western UKR-ch). The event was won by Abram Khavin. In 1940, he tied for 16-17th in Kiev (12th UKR-ch). The event was won by Isaac Boleslavsky. In 1940, he tied for 1st with Mark Stolberg in Kiev (USSR-ch semi-final). In September–October 1940, Gerstenfeld took 17th in Moscow (12th USSR-ch). The event was won by Andor Lilienthal and Igor Bondarevsky. In June 1941, he was in 3rd place in Rostov-on-Don (USSR-ch sf, interrupted tournament).

In 1943, Gerstenfeld became a victim of Nazi atrocities.
