John Crocker (jazz musician)

John Crocker (jazz musician)

John Crocker, born in West Bridgford, Nottingham, made his name as the leading clarinet and sax player for the Chris Barber jazz band for just over 30 years, retiring February 2003. He took over from Ian Wheeler as the sole reedsman, only to have Ian return for a second stint when the band permanently increased to 8 musicians.

Since 'retiring' John has guested with several bands including Kenny Ball and a Ken Colyer tribute band. Often introduced by Chris as the 'best pressed suit' in the band, a casual observer could be excused for thinking that John actually led the band at times, but this was due as much to the generousity of Chris as a band leader, by giving all his musicians due exposure during the concerts, as to John's enthusiasm.
