Contents
History
The school was named after Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, a Spanish conquistador. It opened in 2001, with Monte Bay as its first principal. In 2005 Bay was selected as Nevada's Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.[1]
Extracurricular activities
Clubs
There are more than fifty activities that a student can participate in at Coronado. Among them are Spanish and French clubs, Teenage Republicans,Young Democrats, Forensics, and AP Club.
Varsity Quiz
Coronado's Varsity Quiz team, coached by Mr. Aberman, has been a state playoff team each year since 2004, and they won their first State Championship in 2008. The same year, they became the first team in Nevada to compete in the National Academic Quiz Tournaments' High School Championships.
Forensics
The Coronado High School Forensics team is part of the Golden Desert District and operates within the National Forensics League. It has had quarter-finalists, semi-finalists, and finalists at the county, state and district level. The team has qualified a number of students to the National Tournament in recent years, both in speech and debate events.
Robotics
The Coronado Computer/Robotics Club participates in the annual FIRST Robotics Competition. They received a participation grant from NASA for their "Rockin Robots" project in 2009/10.[2]
Theatre
The Coronado Theatre department puts on two yearly productions. Other productions include Broadway Memories, the Student Directed Short Play Festival, and Theatre Awards Night. The 2009-2010 season included a production of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and a production of George Abbott's The Pajama Game. The department is headed by Mrs. Kelly Burrows.
Choir
The Coronado Choir has performed in cities such as Anaheim, Chicago, and Flagstaff. The choir is now headed by Eric Fleischer.
Coronado Film Institute
The Coronado Film Institute is a club dedicated to watching, analyzing, and discussing new and classic cinema. Headed by Jake Ray Tiranno, the club was founded in 2008 with the goal of bringing good taste in cinema to the school. The club is advised by Mr. Michael Clark.
Athletics
Soccer
The men's soccer team is coached by Dustin Barton and the women's team by Dana Neel. The women's team won the Sunrise region title in 2009 and 2010. In 2008-09 and 2009-10 they were also the Southern Nevada State runner-up.
Track and field
The track and field team is coached by Kim Reed and Nic Bolken. Coach Reed is the head coach of the team as well as the head male coach, she also oversees the distance runners. Coach Bolken is the head girls and sprints coach. Russ Kashka coaches the pole vault, Matt Poleski coaches throws, Lisa Lebedoff coaches hurdles, and Ric Teller is in charge of jumping events.
Cross country
The cross country team is coached by Mark Tondryk and Nathan Terrones, the successor of Coach Steve Behm. The men's 2006 cross country team placed fourth in state, while the women's placed eighth. The 2007 women's team placed first at regionals. The 2010 Varsity Cross Country teams garnered the most success to date, with the women winning regionals and placing second at sate, and the men placing second in regionals and qualifying for state as well.
Swim team
The men's team won the sunrise region during the '05-'06 season. and finished 3rd at state championships. The women's team won the sunrise region during the '05-'06 season and finished 1st at state championships. The team won regionals in 2010. Brenda and Brook Brayman are the swimming team's coaches.
Bowling team
Since the school's opening, Bob McKee has led the women's and men's bowling teams to success. The men bowlers captured back to back Nevada State Championships in 2004 and 2005, while the women bowlers took the Nevada State Championship in both 2006 and 2007.
Golf team
The men's golf team won back-to-back regional championships in the '01-'02 and '02-'03 seasons. The first state champion of the school was golfer Matt Edwards, who went on to play for UNLV. He now plays for NMSU's golf team where he won the '05-'06 WAC Championship as an individual and as a team. Also, Darren Michels won Back to Back individual Regional Championships with scores of 68 and 69.
Wrestling team
The men's wrestling team is coached by head coach Matthew Nishimoto and assistant coach Ty Yung.
Volleyball team
The men's volleyball team is coached by Matt Johnson. The men's team has won the Sunrise Region Title for two years in a row from '08-09' and got Nevada 4a State Runner up in 2009.
Tennis team
The men's and women's tennis teams have been the most consistently successful sports teams at Coronado to date. The men's team has won regionals the last 7 seasons, and has been state runner-up four times (2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010). The women's team won state in 2003, but failed to reach another final until 2010, where they lost to The Meadows School. Both teams are currently coached by Luther Bohanan, who led the Green Valley High School team to a state championship in 1999.
Cougar Pride Marching Band
Coronado's band is directed by Danielle McCracken and Benjamin Franke. The band consists of 149 members. The band made finals at the 2006 Bands of America performance at Northern Arizona University as well as the 2009 Bands of America performance at St. George, Utah, only the fourth school to do so in the history of Clark County School District. The band has traveled to San Diego and London, England to march in the New Year's Day Parade, and to Washington D.C. to perform in the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
Academics
- Many different AP classes are offered to students, ranging from Computer Science to U.S. History and Chemistry to Psychology.
- About 40 percent go to four year colleges and 30 percent enter two year community colleges after graduating senior year.
