At first Thong Pha Phum was the minor district ("
King Amphoe ") Sangkhla Buri, a subordinate of Wang Ka district. In 1939 the name Sangkhla Buri was assigned to Wang Ka, while the minor district was renamed to Thong Pha Phum.
