T5 engine

T5 engine

T5 is a name used by Volvo for high performance, turbocharged, 2.3 and 2.5 litre 5 cylinder internal combustion engines initially for use only in Volvo vehicles, but which eventually were used more widely.

Technical

The currently manufactured engine displaces approximately 2.5 litres. It has 5 cylinders and a double overhead cam valvetrain, is fitted with an intercooled turbocharger and is transversely mounted. The engine 'red lines' at 6500 rpm. The same engine is used in the high performance S60 and V70R where the 'red line' is 6750 , however in this guise it is turbocharged at high pressure rather than the light pressure of the modern T5. Variants

The same basic engine has been very widely adapted, the engine itself fundamentally merely being a turbocharged version of the standard 2.4 litre engine. The D5 is its closest relative in the diesel world, this being a 2.4 litre 5 cylinder turbocharged diesel engine.

Performance

The performance of the T5 engine is quite high, and as a result, the amount of power accessible to the driver is limited by the ECU, or Engine Control Unit. The largest amount of power accessible as standard from this engine is on the S60R, which produces around convert|300|bhp|abbr=on.

Usage

For many years this engine has been used in Volvo vehicles, with the power limited depending on the model. However, most recently the engine has been transferred to the Ford Focus ST(Focus XR5 in Aus)and more recently to the Mondeo XR5 as well, with the power limited to convert|222|bhp|abbr=on. As an illustration of the electronic limitation of the engine's power output, despite the V70 being significantly heavier than the Focus, they both carry the same engine and are limited in such a way that their performance is almost identical. The engine is also used in the Ford S-MAX.

Racing

Earlier Volvo models were used for racing with the T5 engine. These were quite successful.Fact|date=January 2008
