Khawuta kaGcaleka

Khawuta kaGcaleka

Khawuta ka Gcaleka (about 1761-1804) was the second Chief of the Gcaleka people, a sub-group of the Xhosa nation.

Khawuta was the eldest son of Gcaleka ka Phalo, the founder of the Gcaleka people. Khawuta had 3 known sons, Bhurhu ka Khawuta (1785), Hintsa ka Khawuta (1789) and Malashe ka Khawuta. He became paramount chief of the Xhosas in 1792. Not much else is known about Khawuta other than peace reigned during his regime.

Kwawuta died in 1804 near what is now Kentani in the Eastern Cape Province. Other sources record 1794 and 1820 as the year of death.
