- Gambian presidential election, 2006
The Gambian presidential election, 2006 was held on 22 September, 2006. 670,000 Gambians registered to vote, and 59% of registered voters turned out to vote.[ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/5369040.stm Gambian president is re-elected] BBC News, September 23, 2006] Many of the 989 polling booths used marbles which were inserted into candidate drums instead of ballot papers due to the high illiteracy rate. The marble system is only used in Gambia, where it has been used since 1965. Darboe, who received second place with 27% of the vote, rejected the official results, saying that the election was not free and fair and that there was widespread voter intimidation.
