Flemish Region , also called Flanders, and ofBelgium . It borders on (clockwise from the North) theNetherlands and the Belgian provinces of Limburg,Flemish Brabant andEast Flanders . Its capital isAntwerp which comprises thePort of Antwerp . It has an area of 2867 km² and with nearly 1.7 million inhabitants it is the country's most populous province. The eastern part of the province is the main part of theCampine region.History
The region was the northern part of the
Duchy of Brabant . The province was created as the "Department of the two Netes" during theFirst French Empire (when theSouthern Netherlands were part ofFrance ). After the defeat ofNapoleon , the territory became part of theUnited Kingdom of the Netherlands as the province of Antwerp. In 1830, after theBelgian Revolution the province kept its name.Economy
The
Port of Antwerp is the economic heart of the province. The chemical andpetrochemical industry is widely represented in the port region and comprises the world's second largest cluster of petrochemical industry, next to Houston (USA ).The industrial development of the eastern part of the province, part of the
Campine region, started in the nineteenth and twentieth century when industry established itself in the region, such as themetallurgy inBalen . The region aroundTurnhout became famous for its printing business, with companies such asBrepols . In 1872 the "Sablières et Carrières Réunies" (SCR), nowSibelco , was founded to extract thesilica sand layers in Mol for industrial applications (glass ). In the twentieth Century the first nuclear installation inBelgium , at theSCK•CEN in Mol in 1962. The EuropeanInstitute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) was founded inGeel in 1957. Pharmaceutical industry was founded inBeerse in the sixties, withJanssen Pharmaceutica and more recently withGenzyme inGeel .Soudal (silicon ) inTurnhout andRavago (plastics ) inArendonk became leading companies in their markets.Governors from 1815 until 1830
