writer fromGangjin county,South Jeolla province, in present-daySouth Korea . He participated in theKorean independence movement as a teenager, was jailed for six months inDaegu , and lived inJapan from 1920-1923. He died on September 29, 1950 inSeoul , the result of a bullet wound to the stomach during theKorean War .Under the
penname Yeongrang, he was especially active in literature during the 1930s and 1940s. He is best known for writing in the uniqueJeolla dialect .His birthplace (영랑생가), where he spent a significant portion of his life, is located in
