The Avon Fire and Rescue Service is the statutory FRS or Fire and Rescue Service covering the area of what used to be the County of Avon (1974-1996) but now consists of the four unitary authorities of Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire in South West England.

The service was created in 1974 when the county was created. It was originally administered by the Avon County Council, but when this was abolished in 1996, administration of the service was taken over by a joint fire authority made up of councillors from the four unitary authorities.

Also Avon Fire and Rescue Service became the first fire service in the UK to operate a hovercraft. It is used to rescue people from thick mud in the Weston-super-Mare area and during times of inland flooding.

Fire Stations

Avon Fire and Rescue operates 23 fire stations, of which 10 are crewed day and night (wholetime), 1 day crewed (Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00) and the remainder are crewed by retained firefighters who live near to their fire station and can arrive there within five minutes of a call being received.
