December 13 ,1975 inChicago ,Illinois , USA) is an Americanprofessional hockey left winger. On December 13, 2007, he was sent to theToronto Marlies for a conditioning stint. The Marlies are theAmerican Hockey League affiliate of theNational Hockey League 'sToronto Maple Leafs . He is the grandson ofChicago Outfit loanshark and muscle man,Sam Battaglia .Battaglia was drafted by the
Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the sixth round (132nd overall selection) of the1994 NHL Entry Draft . Before joining the Capitals, Battaglia played for theColorado Avalanche andCarolina Hurricanes , where he was a third of the BBC line (Brind'Amour, Battaglia, Cole) during their 2001–2002 Stanley Cup run; the Capitals acquired him andJonas Johansson in a trade that sentSteve Konowalchuk to the Avalanche. Because of the NHL lockout, Bates Battaglia joined his younger brother Anthony on theMississippi Sea Wolves of theECHL for the 2004–05 season onFebruary 21 2005 . This was the first time that he had played on the same team with his younger brother.Growing up, Bates played hockey in
