Roero is a geographical area in the north-east corner of the
province of Cuneo inPiedmont , north-westItaly . This hilly region is known for itswine s and for its fruit production: particularly thepeach es of Canale and the local variety ofpear known as Madernassa which originated in the late eighteenth century inGuarene . The territory lies to the north of
Alba . The river Tanaro marks its southern border, dividing it from theLanghe . To the north-east its informal boundary withMonferrato follows approximately the line of the border between the provinces of Cuneo and Asti, althoughCisterna d’Asti can be taken to be part of Roero. To the north-east it is confined by theprovince of Turin . To the west its border is taken to be the SS 61 state road which runs through the communes of Bra,Sanfrè andSommariva del Bosco . Roero is a recognized wine-making area of Piedmont and along with its neighbours
Langhe andMonferrato it forms the “Distretto Langhe, Roero e Monferrato” wine district. Roero DOC is made from the
Nebbiolo grape with the addition of 2%–5% of the Arneis grape; some 200 hectares of vineyards are devoted to the production of this wine. Roero Arneis is a 100% varietal wine made from theArneis grape variety to which some 425 hectares of vineyards are devoted.
