Plaka lies opposite a small channel of water, across which is the island of Spinalonga. Most recently made famous by Victoria Hislop's novel, The Island, Spinalonga has a rich and varied history having been inhabited by both the Turks, the Ventians, and most recently lepers.

Plaka's small economy largely depended on the leper colony at Spinalonga in the early 20th Century, providing the exiled lepers with food and goods.
