Welsh Australian Rules Football League

Welsh Australian Rules Football League

The Welsh Australian Rules Football League is the governing body of the sport in Wales, organising both a league and the national team.

History

Aussie Rules Wales (ARW) was established on September 1, 2006 with the purpose of raising awareness of Australian rules football throughout Wales. ARW has since ceased trading in January 2008 and has been replaced by the independently run Welsh Australian Rules Football League (WARFL) which is now the unofficial governing body of the football code throughout Wales.

ARW was based in Cardiff and was associated with Aussie Rules International under the umbrella of Aussie Rules UK which is still based in London.

Clubs

Four senior teams in Cardiff, South Cardiff, Gwent and Swansea were organised by ARW to compete in the ARW run Welsh Australian Football League (WAFL) for the 2007 season. With the reorganisation of the sport in Wales, the first full season of Aussie Rules in Wales was 2008.

These clubs formed partner club associations with semi-professional teams from the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), bearing the colours and nicknames of the SANFL partner clubs. Former British Australian Rules Football League club the Swindon Devils (folded in 2008), from England's West Country, competed in the WAFL 2007 season as a guest club.

The teams and their sister clubs in SANFL are:
* Cardiff Double Blues (Sturt Football Club)
* South Cardiff Panthers (South Adelaide Football Club)
* Swansea Magpies (Port Adelaide Football Club)
* Gwent Tigers (Glenelg Football Club)

The league is organised in a similar fashion to the AFL, with the top two teams in a play-off for the league winners.
