Peter Weatherson (born 29 May 1980, in North Shields) is an English footballer. He is currently playing for Greenock Morton in the Scottish First Division.

Early years

Weatherson began his career with local non-league club Newcastle Blue Star.

Queen of the South

In 2000 Queen of the South brought Weatherson into Scottish Lower league football [cite news|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/scot_div_1/3017686.stm|title=Burke in, Weatherson out|publisher=BBC Sport|date=2003-06-24|accessdate=2008-09-17] where he mainly featured as an attacking midfielder. In season 2001/02 Weatherson scored 15 league goals in 33 appearances (4 as a substitute) as Queen of the South won the Scottish Second Division league championship. Under the captancy of Jim Thomson the title was clinched with a 3-0 victory at Forfar Athletic on 20th April 2002. Weatherson hit the first two Queens goals and the third came from Sean O'Connor.

At the end of season 2002/03, Partick Thistle made an offer of £10,000 to QOS for Weatherson [cite news|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/scot_div_1/3016637.stm|title=Weatherson bid rejected|publisher=BBC Sport|date=2003-05-10|accessdate=2008-09-17] , this however was deemed "derisory" and was dismissed out-of-hand thus allowing Morton to come in with a higher bid which was later accepted by Queens.

Greenock Morton

Greenock Morton paid £30,000 to attain Weatherson's services from Queens at the start of season 2003/04. [cite news|url=http://gmfc.net/Squad/&player=27|title=Peter Weatherson's profile|publisher=Greenock Morton F.C. official website|accessdate=2008-09-17] He scored 14 league goals in 31 appearances that season (20 goals from 37 appearances in all competitions) but the campaign ended in disaster when Morton finished in 4th position after leading the division by a significant margin. Allegations of betting irregularities (which turned out to be false) were made against some of the players in the squad including Weatherson.

He overcame this setback and has recently remodelled himself as a defender after manager Jim McInally used him as a utility centre-back in a Tennent's Scottish Cup tie away to Cove Rangers. Weatherson has been working hard to become fitter in the hope of making that role up front his own.

On 10th March 2007 Peter Weatherson scored his 100th career goal in a 3-0 victory against Alloa Athletic at Recreation Park, Alloa [cite news|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/scot_div_1/6433751.stm|title=Alloa Athletic 0-3 Morton|publisher=BBC Sport|date=2007-03-10|accessdate=2008-09-17] . Weatherson recently became the club's top scorer for season 2006/2007, when he scored 4 goals during a 9-1 home victory against Forfar Athletic [cite news|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/scot_div_1/6531455.stm|title=Morton 9-1 Forfar Athletic|publisher=BBC Sport|date=2007-04-07|accessdate=2008-09-17] , bringing his seasons tally to 17 goals which 15 of them he was playing in defence and 2 from midfield.

Weatherson finished 4 of his first 5 seasons at Cappielow as top goalscorer, except season 2005/06 where he finished second behind returning fans favourite Derek Lilley.
