Vegan Society of Australia

Vegan Society of Australia

The Vegan Society of Australia (a.k.a. The Vegan Society (AU)) is a member-based organisation based in Australia devoted to veganism.

The society was started by Fred Whittle and John Fairbrass when they emigrated to Australia from Great Britain. Originally the society was the Australian arm of The Vegan Society (UK) and called "Vegan Australia".

The society has contributed significantly to the raising of awareness of veganism in Australia, particularly during the early years. The community swelled from just a handful of members in the early 70s to 600 during the mid 80s. It has received the attention and support of some great thinkers including philosopher Peter Singer and Animal Liberation Victoria's Laurie Levy.

Its major communication is a magazine called "Vegan Australia" which was released every 3 months for some years, but is now only produced irregularly.

The society primarily investigates vegan products and services, as well as medical services on behalf of its members and reports back in the form of a newssheet.

With the growth of the internet, the Society has since waned in both membership and output, overtaken by such organisations as Vegetarian Network Victoria.
