next_route=35State Route 34 is a short primary
state highway in theU.S. state ofVirginia , lying entirely within the town of South Boston. It runs along the full length of Hodges Street from Main Street (State Route 129) east to U.S. Route 360.Until 1948, State Route 304, which originally ran northeast from South Boston to near Scottsburg along present U.S. Route 360, did not enter the town of South Boston. It was extended at that time from the east corporate limits west along Hodges Street (now SR 34) to State Route 129 (Main Street). [CTB minutes|05-1948-01, page 18] An eastern bypass of South Boston (now US 360 and State Route 304Y), heading south and west from SR 304 to U.S. Route 501, was approved in 1942. [CTB minutes|03-1942-01, page 9] A spur (now also US 360) from its midpoint south over the
Dan River to U.S. Route 58 was later added, and the north-south piece was assigned the SR 34 designation by 1948, [CTB minutes|09-1948-01, page 5] with State Route 34Y on the east-west (Seymour Drive) portion. However, when finished in 1952, this bypass instead became a relocation of SR 304, and SR 34Y became SR 304Y, while the old SR 304 on Hodges Street became SR 34.
