Type Window decorator

Emerald Window Decorator (formerly known as cgwd, which stands for Compiz Generic Window Decorator) is a window decorator needed by multi-windowed desktop computers for the Compiz compositing window manager, written by Quinnstorm.

Emerald was written for the community version of Compiz (known as compiz-quinnstorm) as a replacement for the previous de facto window decorator for Compiz, gnome-window-decorator (now called gtk-window-decorator), originally written by David Reveman. It includes several different theme engines (among them the "legacy" engine, retained for compatibility with gnome-window-decorator), a utility for theme creation and selection, D-Bus integration, and many other features.[1]

Emerald used to be the default window decorator for Beryl, a fork based on the compiz-quinnstorm codebase.[2] Now, after the development of Beryl has been discontinued, Emerald is maintained within the Compiz Fusion project.[3]

Recently there has been work in the Compiz Fusion project to create a replacement for emerald, the current leading candidate for which is Jasper, a much more customizable window decorator which supports plugins, scriptable buttons and animation.
